Safety

The waters of Tasman Bay are very safe, but it’s important not to be complacent as the sea conditions can be very challenging if the wind and waves build up. The water is warm and with an on shore wind, there is safe landing along the entire course. Here are the main safety considerations.

  • paddle a suitable for surfski for your ability and the conditions.

  • know how to remount like a ninja. If you can’t remount your surfski in wind and waves, when you’re fatigued, you need a more stable surfski.

  • a certified PFD with whistle attached must be worn at all times.

  • a leg or body leash - a strong one!

  • all paddlers must carry 1 communication device (epirb/PLB, phone in waterproof case, VHF marine radio)

  • all paddlers must carry 1 safety signalling device; a flare, or a mirror

  • food and fluid are important to have, it’s an endurance paddle.

  • dress for the conditions.

It is important that all entrants know that the event will take place in rough seas and high wind. The cut off for wind will be about 40-knots, which can produce a 2-3 metre swell.
Paddlers must make a sensible decision on the day as to the conditions and their ability.
